Speedometer TermsPITOT (pee-toe) MOUNT - A part attached to the transom to pickup water (psi) as the boat travels through the water. This water runs through a hose to the mechanical speedo in the dash to register your speed. AERATION - The mixing of air (bubbles) with the water under the boat. This helps to lift the boat from the water to increase your speed. You do not want aerated water in the pitot tube as it will cause the speedo to read low. There should be solid (non-aerated) water running through the pitot tube. In order to produce accurate speedo readings, the pitot tube must be placed in un-aerated water. New stepped bottom technology can make it tricky to get the pitot tube mounted correctly. A thru-hull fitting allows the tube to be mounted on the step bottoms and the hose routed directly through the hull to the speedo, leaving no hose exposed. CALIBRATION - The process of matching an instrument’s reading to a piece of test equipment with accurate data to ensure the gauge is reading properly. Speedometers cannot be calibrated in the field. KICK-UP - A type of pitot tube that will swing out of the way if it hits debris in the water. Also good to clear a trailer bunk or when beaching a boat. PITOT (pee-toe) MOUNT - A part attached to the transom to pickup water (psi) as the boat travels through the water. This water runs through a hose to the mechanical speedo in the dash to register your speed. |
